Climate.

Cheticamp is nestled between the Cape Breton Highlands and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, offering easy access to hiking and pristine beaches. The Gulf has shallower waters, resulting in warmer temperatures compared to the Atlantic, which is perfect for Cheticamp beachgoers.
Summer temperatures range from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. When winter arrives, the temperatures can dip as low as -5 to -25 degrees Celsius, and the northern winds from the water often make it feel much colder.
It is often said that Nova Scotia's weather is known for its day-to-day changeability, with constant shifts in temperature and conditions. In Cheticamp, the weather always keeps you guessing; it can be rainy in the morning and snowing in the afternoon.

Snowmobiling Paradise

Despite the snow being swept away by the wind in many parts of the Cheticamp area, there are still instances where the driveway needs to be shoveled, especially after a snowstorm! Winters where we do not see an abundance of snow, there is most often lots in the highlands, perfect for snowmobiling or cross-country skiing.

The Land of "Suêtes"

Perhaps you have observed that many houses in the Cheticamp area have no windows on the southeast side. It's not because we dislike mountain views! We have strong southeasterly hurricane-force winds that the locals call suêtes, ranging from 100 to 230 kilometres per hour. If there is a suête coming, the locals will shelter vehicles and pick up any loose objects around their homes. From a two-by-four to a picnic table, these winds will turn them into projectiles that can damage cars and break windows. Combine these winds with snow, and shelter in place with your storm chips! Schools will be closed and many businesses as well.
